Today’s blog entry will focus on statistics about car accidents in Gwinnett County, Georgia, used the report released by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
As a car accident lawyer in Atlanta, I am always interested in the statistical reports that the Georgia Government puts out. This Gwinnett County, Georgia, car accident report collects statistics from Lawrenceville, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Buford Rest Haven, Sugar Hill, Suwanee, Norcross, Lilburn, Grayson, Snellville, Loganville, and Duluth are all included.
In 2005, Gwinnett County had 29,997 car crashes, and that number rose in 2006, when 30,871 cars and trucks crashed on roads in Gwinnett County. Since then, however, the number has dropped each year. In 2007, 30,165 car accidents occurred in Gwinnett County, and then the number of auto wrecks dropped to 25,819 in 2008, and even lower in 2009, to 23,787 car crashes.
The number of injuries in car accidents in Gwinnett County followed exactly the same pattern. The county saw 10,039 injuries from auto wrecks in 2005, and even more in 2006, when the number of people hurt in car wrecks in Gwinnett County increased to 10,169. The number of injuries in car wrecks dropped in 2007, however, to 9919, and still further in 2008, to 8635. In 2006, the number of injuries in car accidents Gwinnett County ticked downward yet again, to 8012 injuries, the fewest of any of the five years surveyed.
Gwinnett County has a large number of fatal car crashes every year. 85 people died in car accidents in Gwinnett in 2005, and even more died as a result of car and truck crashes in 2006. The number of deaths in traffic accidents decreased to 67 in 2007, and dropped a long way, to 51, in 2008. The number ticked back up in 2009, however, when 60 deaths occurred in crashes on Gwinnett County roadways.
In Gwinnett County, the fatal car wrecks are distributed surprisingly evenly across the county.
A very large number of deaths in car accidents occurred along the I-85 corridor running through Norcross, Lawrenceville, and near Duluth. A tragic number of deaths also occur along I-985 the Gainesville Connector, running near Suwanee, Sugar Hill, Buford and Rest Haven. A large number of fatal crashes occurred, especially in 2007, in Buford along Ga. 20.
The Ga. 120 route running through Lawrenceville was extremely dangerous, as well.
US 78 running through Snellville and Loganville had quite a few fatal car accidents, as did Peachtree Industrial Blvd/Hwy 141 and Buford Highway/Ga. 13 as they cross Norcross, Berkley Lake, and Duluth.
Additionally, far too many deaths in car accidents occurred on GA 20/Conyers Rd and Winder Rd/ Ga Hwy 81 as they weave in and out of Gwinnett County along its southeast border, and Jimmy Carter Blvd and Rockbridge Rd running to the south of Norcross and Lilburn along the southwest side of Gwinnett County.
Alcohol was a factor in between 1/3 and ¼ of the fatal car wrecks in Gwinnett County, and speed was a factor in 1/6 to 1/5 of all the car crashes that caused deaths.
